The Intravenous therapy (IV) therapy/ blood withdrawal course consists of 36 hours, 26 of which are of lecture and nine hours of which are clinical with hands on experience. This course is designed for vocational nurses, licensed vocational nurses, registered nurses, psychiatric technicians, medical assistants, and phlebotomists. At the end of this course, students will have the necessary skills to initiate intravenous therapy, administer IV fluids and withdraw blood. Course Description:
The IV therapy course is designed to empower licensed nurses and other healthcare providers in initiating IV’s, administering fluids thru a primary or secondary line as well as the post insertion care, complications and monitoring related to IV therapy. Upon completion, all LVN students will be eligible for certification. Please note that for certification (LVN and VN students) must perform three successful supervised venipunctures and three successful capillary blood withdrawals on live subjects. Initial practice will occur on a manican. Students may practice on other students or bring a proxy for practice.
Prerequisite:
Individuals must be healthcare providers or LVN’s/VN’s. Please note students must be a LVN/VN student to be eligible for the 36 hours Continuing Education (CE) hours. All others will get a certificate of completion only.

IV Therapy and blood withdrawal courses are available to other health care staff, however, Please note that other health care staff are not required to perform the three successful venipuncture slash skin punctures on live subjects. This is optional. Please note that a certificate of completion will be issued but in the event that the participant does not participate in the venipunctures a certificate of observation would be issued. Please note CE units are not offered for students who are not LVN’s/VN’s.
Absolutely! Once you do pass your NCLEX and become licensed, we will forward documentation to the BVNPT to link to your LVN license.
